A final musical gift for 2016 from the David Leonnig, as provided for the West Texas Jazz Society and West Texas Public Radio.
A few of the recordings in this program feature Buddy Tate, and all include Buck Clayton, both of whom many years later visited the Odessa Jazz Parties. These recordings have just come to light this year from a collection recorded by Bill Savory. This music has been largely unheard for nearly 80 years. Enjoy.

The jazz history of the Permian Basin has generated a number of interesting stories. Regional jazz parties have been held in dozens of cities over the past half century, but the longest continuously running jazz party is the West Texas Jazz Party of Midland and Odessa, Texas. A completed documentary celebrates the first 50 years of the party which began as the original Odessa Jazz Party, founded in 1967 by Odessa’s Doctor O.A. “Jimmie” Fulcher. This program is heard on both Marfa Public Radio and KXWT Odessa-Midland.
